Overview of Part III PEPS
The Part III PEPS (Patient Experience Performance Skills) exam is designed to assess your clinical decision-making and optometric skills through a series of patient encounters and clinical skills assessments.

10 Patient Encounter Stations
2 Clinical Skills Stations
Time Duration:
Total session length: 4.5 hours
Each station has a specific structure to follow.
Station Rotation:
Candidates will rotate through 12 stations, and the order at which the candidate starts will be assigned at random. Therefore, the candidate may start in a skills or patient encounter station. So be prepared to start with anything!
Recording:
All exam stations are audio and video recorded, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of your performance.

Here you’ll demonstrate your hands-on skills in various areas
Anterior Segment Skills:
Biomicroscopy
4-mirror Gonioscopy
Goldmann Applanation Tonometry
Posterior Segment Skills:
Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy
Dilated Biomicroscopy and Non-Contact Fundus Lens Evaluation

Examination Duration:
Each examination period lasts 18 minutes TOTAL.
Observation Time: 3 minutes to prepare for the station.
Examination Time: 15 minutes to perform tasks.
Breaks:
4-minute breaks between each station.
After completing 8 cycles, you'll have a 24-minute break. Use this time wisely to recharge with a snack, hydrate, and plan for the next stations.
Use this time to think about which category of patient encounter you have already completed so that you have a general idea about which category is coming up.
Keep in mind that there can be some overlap between categories (example: keratoconus can be in the category of anterior segment and contact lens)
